Be part of a global voice for optometry

  • We are the first and only optometric organisation that has an official relationship with the World Health Organization (WHO)
  • We maintain the highest level of membership of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), which entitles the WCO to a seat on their Board
  • The Chairman of our Public Health Committee is Chairman of the IAPB Africa region, a significant achievement for optometry

Show support for Vision 2020 – the right to sight

  • Vision 2020 is a global initiative for the elimination of avoidable blindness, launched jointly by the IAPB and WHO. WCO members will be supporting this vital work

Programme of events

  • We organises a programme of events, hosted around the world, that enable members to meet and discuss global optometric issues and share knowledge
  • 'Advancing Optometry Worldwide', our international conference was held in Chicago in June 2012 and united representatives from professional associations, regulatory groups, assessment agencies and academia to discuss the strategic position of the global optometric profession

  • Our monthly enewsletter keeps members up-to-date on global optometric news, developing issues and the latest events
  • Our website has been enhanced to provide a global source of optometry data and an extensive resource centre for members

Access to financial support

  • Our Fellowship programme provides financial assistance for individuals and organisations to support work in countries needing help with optometric education, patient care, community service and organisational development
  • The World Optometry Foundation (WOF) is our charitable partner, complementing WCO's work by financing service projects that foster self-sufficiency and long-term independence amongst developing nations

Setting world standards

  • WCO recognises the unique needs of each country, within a framework of legal standards
  • Our Scope of Practice questionnaire is a tool which can be used by members for analysing optometry. This provides vital information to assist them to prepare strategies for developing optometry in their own countries
  • Our competencies assist in the creation of teaching syllabi and statutory definitions of scope of practice

Influence and action

  • WCO’s influence in working with national Governments can achieve significant outcomes in areas where there are unmet needs for quality eye care
